danone.communities: a prudent investment fund backing social business entrepreneurship

Our work is backed by the danone.communities fund, which places at least 90% of assets in fixed-income securities through investments in bond and money-market funds, wherever possible managed in accordance with the principles of socially responsible investment. Remaining assets, representing at most 10% of the fund total, are invested in our venture-capital fund, which in turn invests in businesses that make societal progress their main priority.

The parent fund is open to investments from Danone shareholders, employees and other stakeholders, and from all individual and institutional investors.

Danone shareholders also have the option of investing all or part of their Danone dividends in the fund.

Danone has invested €20 million in the fund, but is not involved in its commercial promotion.

Fund management and distribution

The parent mutual fund (SICAV) is managed by Amundi Asset Management.

Fund units are distributed:

  • to corporate and institutional clients through the Amundi Asset Management network
  • to individual investors through the LCL banking network and other channels. Units can be purchased through any French ban  (only unavailable for French Residents so far)

The FCPR venture-capital fund is managed by Crédit Agricole Private Equity.

Find information on our partner Amundi and compliance of the Code of Transparence danone.communities AFG / FIR / EuroSIF here  (French version only, for the moment).

In September 2011, the fund has been rewarded with the label ISR NOVETHIC, that "rewards rigorous approach of the ISR by Amundi, the transparency of its process of analysis and investment, and the quality of its non-financial reporting".

Please, discover the documents "Processus, empreinte et inventaires" of the different parts of the fund on the SICAV French page.

How to invest ?

The recommended investment horizon is a minimum six months. Redemptions before the end of this six-month period are subject to fees. The capital invested in businesses is committed for periods of five to seven years, with a target rate of return close to that on money-market instruments over the same period.

If you bank with LCL or Crédit Agricole, contact your branch with the references given above.

If you bank elsewhere, you can ask to invest in danone.communities, but your bank will charge an extra fee for administering a competitor’s product.

Strict criteria for social investing

The danone.communities FCPR venture-capital fund focuses investments on businesses that promise significant social benefits in line with Danone’s mission of bringing health through food to as many people as possible.

These community-centered investments will back innovative businesses, mainly in poor and developing countries.

The businesses concerned must operate in essentially the same areas as Danone so that the group can assist them with its know-how and experience. This means that their main activities will involve making food products or providing services with health benefits. Particular emphasis will be placed on products that help combat nutritional deficiencies.

The businesses selected may also operate upstream or downstream from these sectors, for example in the production of raw materials or excipients used in food products, or in the collection and processing of packaging waste.

We are also interested in businesses with projects opening new horizons in social entrepreneurship.

In making our choices, we are particularly attentive to the experience and quality of the business and its management, and to the principles motivating its managers.

The danone.communities FCPR venture-capital fund agrees on a target rate of return with the business selected, but benefits for society remain our priority. Our first consideration is thus creating social value and delivering benefits in terms of employment, nutrition and sustainable development. Profit is no longer an end in itself, but a means to achieve social goals.

We work alongside local partners offering the best access to expertise and able to help us get to know the local market and ensure the viability of projects. These partners also welcome investors in the businesses selected, contributing to the quality of planning and embodying the cooperative spirit of danone.communities.
